Who can apply?
Solar Households
Households with:
- Solar PV panels
- Battery storage
- A compatible inverter system (Sunsynk, Deye, Sungrow)
- An electric geyser
- Reliable Wi-Fi connectivity
Non-Solar Households
Households without solar may still qualify if they:
- Have an electric geyser
- Have reliable Wi-Fi connectivity

What to expect from the process
- Apply online Complete a short application to see if your household qualifies. To apply, you’ll need: Proof of ownership, a copy of ID and a recent electricity bill.
- Qualification review Our team reviews your household information and system compatibility.
- Complete outstanding documents If selected, you’ll receive a link to upload any remaining required documents and complete your onboarding process.
- Professional installation Plentify SolarBot and/or HotBot devices are professionally installed at your home.
- 2-week learning phase During this period, the system learns how your home currently uses energy so that optimisation can be tailored to your household.
- Smart optimisation begins Sit back and enjoy getting more from your solar through intelligent energy management.

Who can apply for Project Smart Solar?
Project Smart Solar is currently limited to qualifying households within eThekwini Municipality. Homes with solar and battery systems are encouraged to apply, but some non-solar households with electric geysers may also qualify.
Why does Project Smart Solar involve research activities?
Project Smart Solar is part of a pilot initiative exploring smarter ways for homes across eThekwini to use energy more efficiently and improve energy resilience.
Do I need solar to apply?
No. While the programme is optimised for homes with solar and battery systems, homes without solar may still qualify if they have an electric geyser and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity.
What do selected households receive?
Qualifying households may receive:
- Plentify SolarBot and/or HotBot devices
- Professional installation and onboarding support
- Access to the Plentify Home App
- Entry into a draw to win one of five R1000 vouchers after successful installation and onboarding
Will this interfere with my existing system?
Project Smart Solar works with compatible existing systems and is installed by trained professionals.
Is this complicated to use?
No daily energy management is required.
Will I still be in control of my system?
Yes. The Plentify Home App gives you simple controls to manage your system whenever you want to, while intelligent automations continue running in the background to help your home use energy more efficiently.
What happens after I apply?
If your household qualifies, our team will contact you with the next steps for onboarding, document uploads, and installation scheduling.
What happens during the 2-week learning phase?
During the learning phase, no optimisation changes are made yet. The system simply learns how your household currently uses energy so that future optimisation can be tailored to your home and routine.
What does participation involve?
Participants will:
- Complete onboarding
- Participate in a short learning phase
- Participate in occasional surveys and project feedback
- Allow system performance monitoring
Is there any upfront cost?
No. Selected households receive installation and Plentify devices at no upfront cost as part of Project Smart Solar.
Can I increase my chances in the voucher draw?
Yes. Participants receive one draw entry after successful installation and onboarding completion. Additional entries can be earned through successful household referrals, up to a maximum of 5 referrals.
